Drink Like a Sardinian
This week I wanted to give a shout out to native Sardinian grapes that you might not have heard of before.
Cannonau and Vermentino are by far the most important red and white grapes of Sardinia. The former lauded for its heart healthy antioxidants contributing to Sardinia’s label as a top Blue Zone for population longevity. But Sardinia has other grapes that I believe will contribute to a happier life as well.
The Atzei Wineries “Saragat”, is made of 100% Monica. It is typically used as a blending grape, however, as a single varietal wine it is lovely. It is best drunk in its youth, having mild tannins and bountiful flavors of juicy cherry and raspberry fruits, a touch of spice, and a hint of violets that drift like the “Levante” east wind across the island.
The Audarya Winery produces many wines, but their white wine made from the ancient Nuragus grape is a real treat. It is named for the Nuragic peoples who lived in Sardinia for over 2,000 years before the Roman conquest of Sardinia in 238 BCE. The wine is delicate, but with a crisp acidity, and flavors of citrus, white peach and summer melon. It is rare to find this wine outside of Sardinia.
- Atzei “Saragat” Monica $22.99
- Audrya Nuragus di Cagliari $19.99

See ya at The Market
