Unique Super Tuscans
The “Super Tuscan” category is comprised of high quality red wines that blend non-indigenous grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah, into Sangiovese based wines. But there are other blends that I wanted to share with folks today that I think are delicious and break from the mold.
1. Il Palazzo “Dinastico” Toscana: This is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Alicante Bouschet. Alicante Bouschet is a Portuguese grape that was created by crossing Petit Bouschet and Grenache. With deep red flesh this grape contributes more color, and deep dark fruit and smokey characteristics. ($17.99)
2. Fattoria Uccelliera “Ginepraia”: A blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Petit Verdot. This wine straddles the line of tradition and modernity with its lean dry cherry flavors and bright acidity. However, the Petit Verdot offers deep blackberry, blueberry, flavors along with notes of violets, and savory herbs. ($24.99)
3. Casa Dei “Sogno Mediterraneo” GSM: diverting completely from Sangiovese and traditional Bordeaux varietals this wine is comprised of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre from Tuscany. This style of blend is often seen in Frances Southern Rhone Valley. Yet this wine expresses a clear Italian accent with firmer tannins and bright acidity. Its flavors of black cherry, plums, blackberry, tobacco, and crushed dried herbs mingle on the palate which is both powerful and supple at the same time. ($24.99)
