New Wines and Valentines
This Friday is the day before Valentine’s Day, and I have selected four Italian wines that I think would be perfect to share with loved ones. Their flavors and aromas capture the essence of the holiday in a glass!
Le Banchette’s Valpolicella is delicate and driven by aromas of roses and soft strawberries. La Miraja’s Ruche is a rare and exotic wine with aromas of violets, iris,and flavors of wild berry fruits and white pepper. The Pratesi “Locorosso”, Super Tuscan is new to the shop and bursting with energy and flavors of cherry, blackberry, and a kiss of chocolate. Finally, ending with Fattoria Uccelliera’s “Castellaccio”: a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet that is firm and full bodied. Its layers of plush fruit flavors and silky tannins coat the mouth and flavors linger for ages.

This Friday I wanted to do a tasting battle between France and Italy and in the process unpack Bordeaux wines, showing the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from both countries.
Why blend these two grapes? How does Italy’s terroir accent get expressed in these grapes as opposed to France? What is white Bordeaux?

The “Super Tuscan” category is comprised of high quality red wines that blend non-indigenous grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah, into Sangiovese based wines. But there are other blends that I wanted to share with folks today that I think are delicious and break from the mold.
