Chillable Italian Reds

It’s officially Summer, and with that comes cookouts, pool parties and the dreaded Maryland heat and humidity. But I’m thinking about everyone this season and want to keep the good times rolling. So, I decided to show off some red wines that you can drink chilled to stay cool and refreshed this Summer. Whether you’re drinking these with food or without, they are sure to please.

  • Tenuta Olim Baudana Grignolino D’Asti: A snappy light bodied red from the Piedmont region of Italy. Tart cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate fruits tickle the tongue with this wines bright acidity. Mild tannins make this a very juicy and less astrigent wine. Great with prosciutto and melon!
  • Stefano Rossotto “Vivace” Freisa: A lightly effervescent red made in the Piedmont as well. Juicy strawberry, and wild berry fruits mingle with grippy fine tannins on the palate. This would be so good with Frito Misto and Japanese Tempura dishes.
  • Gorghi Tondi Frappato: A native grape to Sicily, Frappato burst with raspberry and cherry fruits; bright acidity and delicate tannins. Try this with grilled seafood, or lighter pasta dishes.
  • Punta Crena “Vigneto Isasco” Rossese: One of my favorite reds from Liguria. The Ruffino family who owns this winery has tended these vineyards for over 500 years! Grown on steep coastal ridges these grapes express the land beautifully. Salty breezes and herbal aromatics blend into the fresh strawberry, and tart cherry fruits flavors, finishing with alluring notes of dried rose petals and solid minerality.

Stay cool with Summer!
