Winery Spotlight
“La Gerla”

I’m very lucky here at The Italian Market to get to meet people and taste wines from all over the world. I have a deep love for Italian wines, especially those made with Sangiovese. So it was wonderful to meet and taste with Alberto Passeri, agronomist and General Manager of the La Gerla wine estate in Tuscany.

La Gerla was established in 1976 when founder Sergio Rossi purchased the property from the renowned Biondi Santi family, who are giants in the world of Brunello. With fervor and passion the La Gerla winery has established itself as a top producer in the region.

Alberto and I tasted all of their offerings. But I wanted to shine a light on the “Birba Toscana”. This is a declassified Brunello under the “Toscana IGT” label. This wines base grapes are the same as what would be used in their flagship Brunello, however, it is aged in French oak and undergoes less conditioning time than a traditional Brunello. The resulting wine is a balanced, bold, and silken Sangiovese that is ready to drink but will also age over 10 years. The regional respect for traditional winemaking is admirable, and creating this wine in a different subcategory allows the winery to be creative, as well as allow us to sample world class wines at an approachable price point. Cheers!
